We envision a world in which service, social justice and global awareness are critical components of education for youth everywhere, creating a generation of young people who think of ‘service’ as an integrated part of their day to day existence and lead initiatives in their communities that improve lives.
Living Histories is a 501(c)3 non-profit that helps young people discover their voice, and use that voice for the greater social good. Founded in 1999, we have developed award-winning project based curriculum that emphasizes community service and global awareness using art, technology, and writing as mediums.
Headquartered in California, we target schools with high numbers of at-risk youth; community organizations; homeless shelters; refugee camps; and any organization or location where youth can gather during out of school time. We believe that all young people should have the opportunity to learn and live up to their fullest potential, and that education is a tool to improve the quality of life. Through out model, we re-conceptualize education, defining it as the primary tool through which youth engage in and change their communities.
We empower students to become leaders in their communities and help them recognize their individual ability make a positive impact on the world. We strive to provide learning opportunities to as many young people as possible, to help our students find their voice, and in turn show them ways to use their voice for the collective good. We are creating a movement of individuals committed to fostering social change and service through education.
Living Histories has a ten year history of creating and implementing award winning programming and curriculum that helps youth find their own voice, and in turn, encourages them to use that voice for the betterment of society as a whole. As we enter into our second decade, Living Histories is excited to be connecting with another generation of students through our art and literacy based project learning models.
We have grown into an organization that not only educates youth, but also acts as a catalyst: linking community resources, students and agencies together, training teachers, and fostering a community of individuals committed to the idea of social justice and equality through education. We are eager to move forward with bigger, broader and bolder strokes that make a lasting, positive impact in the communities that we serve.
